Edo Wonderland Nikko: a day in samurai Japan, with Nikko next door
Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura recreates a town of the Edo period, the age of samurai, ninja and merchants, in the forests near Kinugawa Onsen. Actors stay in character in the streets, there are ninja shows and a courtesan parade, and you can rent a costume and become part of the scene. It is one of the most fun days near Tokyo for families.

What happens in the town
You walk through a gate into streets of merchant houses, a magistrate's office and teahouses, where staff in period costume greet you as a traveller from another age. Through the day there are ninja action shows, theatre, and a slow, elaborate oiran parade of courtesans in towering clogs. Archery, ninja star throwing and traditional games are open to visitors.
Dressing the part
Costume rental lets you spend the day as a samurai, ninja, merchant or lady of the Edo period, with make-up and wigs available. It takes time at busy periods, so book or go early. Children love it, and the photographs are the best souvenir of the day.
Planning your visit
Allow four to five hours to see the main shows; check the show schedule as soon as you arrive. The park has regular closing days, usually one weekday, and changes its programme with the seasons, so look at the official calendar before you choose the date.
Combining it with Nikko
Edo Wonderland is about thirty minutes by car from the shrines of Nikko, so a long day can include Toshogu in the morning and Edomura in the afternoon, or Edomura followed by a hot spring at Kinugawa. With children, one of the two plus a relaxed lunch is usually enough.
By car, and the price
Edo Wonderland is about two to two and a half hours from central Tokyo by car. By train, the Tobu limited express to Kinugawa Onsen and a shuttle or bus take about the same, with a change. A ten hour day from your Tokyo hotel is from ¥157,500 for the Toyota Alphard with up to four guests, tolls, parking and fuel included, and child seats are arranged at no extra cost. Your chauffeur can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese.
