Luxury vintage shopping in Tokyo: Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, district by district

Tokyo is one of the world's best cities for pre-owned designer pieces: vintage Chanel, Hermès scarves and Kelly bags, Louis Vuitton, jewellery and watches, often in remarkable condition. The best shops are grouped in a few districts, so plan the day by area.

Omotesando and Aoyama: the vintage Chanel heartland

Amore has four shops a few minutes' walk from Omotesando crossing: Amore Vintage Omotesando for Chanel bags and jewellery, Amore Vintage Aoyama for Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Rolex, Amore Wardrobe & Archive in Kita-Aoyama for Chanel clothing, and Amore Archive for a mix of houses. Nearby, Vintage Qoo is known for vintage Chanel, and KOMEHYO VINTAGE TOKYO and Allu add more. All four Amore shops take online bookings for a visit, useful at weekends.

Ginza: Hermès and the big resellers

The Brand Off main store in Ginza 5-chome has four floors, one dedicated to Hermès, Birkin and Kelly included. KOMEHYO Ginza covers bags, jewellery and watches, and Allu's Ginza store has a floor of luxury watches. Most of these shops open at 10 or 11 am and close around 8 pm; check the official sites before you go.

Shibuya and Shinjuku: volume, and something different

In Shibuya, KOMEHYO fills four floors of Shibuya ZERO GATE, and RAGTAG, a used designer chain since 1985, sorts labels by brand in its Shibuya and Harajuku shops. In Shinjuku, KOMEHYO has three buildings on the same block, and Daikokuya, a pawnshop chain founded in 1947, has its flagship. For a change of mood, Nude Trump in Shibuya, open since 1988, is a cult name for American vintage and leather rather than designer bags.

Condition grades and authenticity

Tags usually carry a condition grade, from new or unused at the top down to grades such as A, B and C as wear increases. Each shop sets its own scale, and RAGTAG even draws where each mark is. Check corners, handles and lining, and whether the box and dust bag are included. Brand Off and Allu say specialist appraisers check every item before sale, and Brand Off says its stock meets the standards of an industry association set up against counterfeits. Ask any shop how it checks its stock, and keep the receipt. Flea markets and auction apps offer no such checks.

Tax-free from November 2026

From 1 November 2026 tax-free shopping in Japan works as a refund. You pay the price including 10 percent consumption tax, keep your receipts and register your purchases, and the tax is refunded at customs when you leave Japan, before check-in. Bring your passport when you shop, because it is still recorded at the till, and ask if the shop is tax-free before paying.

The route by car, and the price

A typical day: Ginza late in the morning, Omotesando and Aoyama after lunch, Shibuya or Shinjuku to finish. In Omotesando the shops are minutes apart on foot, so the car drops you at the first and meets you at the last. Between districts, a chauffeur by the hour keeps your bags safely in the car and collects you at the door. It is from ¥16,000 per hour with a two hour minimum, and this day usually takes five to six hours; a full day is from ¥126,000 for 8 hours, or ¥157,500 for 10, tolls, parking and fuel included. Your chauffeur can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese, at the same price. He drives and waits; he does not choose, bargain or check items for you.
