Haneda airport: taxi or private car? An honest comparison
From Haneda a taxi is often cheaper than a private transfer, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. What you pay for with a private car is everything around the ride: someone waiting for you, a price fixed before you fly, room for the luggage, and a driver who speaks your language. Here is how the options really compare, so you can choose the right one for your arrival.

What a taxi from Haneda costs
Haneda runs a fixed fare taxi system to central Tokyo, priced by destination ward rather than by the meter. Expect roughly ¥7,600 to Tokyo Station, ¥8,500 to Shibuya and ¥9,100 to Asakusa, with expressway tolls on top. Between 22:00 and 05:00 a night surcharge of about 20 percent applies. You queue at the taxi rank outside arrivals, and a standard taxi takes two large suitcases comfortably, so a family of four with luggage often needs two cars.
What a taxi from Narita costs
Narita is 60 to 90 minutes from the city, so the gap closes. A taxi to central Tokyo usually lands between ¥20,000 and ¥30,000, depending on the operator and the ward, plus tolls and the same night surcharge. Narita also has fixed fare taxis, but the fare depends on the zone and on which company you choose at the counter. For a full comparison with the train and the bus, see our Narita guide.
Does Uber work at Tokyo airports?
Yes, but not the way it does at home. In Tokyo Uber mostly dispatches ordinary licensed taxis and a premium black car tier, so the price is close to a taxi and you often pay a pickup fee on top. It is useful if you already have the app and a card set up. It does not give you a driver waiting in the arrivals hall or a price agreed before you land.
What a private transfer adds
A private transfer with Driven Tokyo starts from ¥29,500 from Haneda and ¥45,500 from Narita, for the whole car, with tolls, parking and fuel included and the price confirmed in writing before you travel. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, waits in arrivals with a name board, and one hundred minutes of waiting after landing are included. Cars are a Toyota Alphard for up to four guests with three to four suitcases, or a Hiace for groups of up to nine. The chauffeur can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese, at the same price. Water, soft drinks, coffee and refreshing towels are complimentary on board.
When the taxi is the better choice
If you are one or two people with light luggage, landing at Haneda in the daytime, staying in central Tokyo, and you do not mind the taxi queue, take the taxi. It is a good, safe, clean service and it will cost you less. We would rather you trusted us for the next journey than overpaid for this one.
When a private car is worth it
It makes sense when the details matter more than the fare: a late or early arrival, three or more people with large suitcases, small children who need a car seat, an elderly traveller who should not stand in a queue, a business arrival straight to a meeting, or a first visit to Japan when you would rather be met by someone who speaks your language. From Narita, with a group, it is often close to the price of two taxis.
Frequently asked questions
Is a taxi from Haneda cheaper than a private transfer?
Usually yes. A fixed fare taxi to central Tokyo costs roughly ¥7,600 to ¥9,100 plus tolls, while a private transfer starts from ¥29,500 for the whole car. The private car adds a meet and greet, flight tracking, waiting time, more luggage space and a chauffeur who speaks your language.
How much is a taxi from Narita to Tokyo?
Usually between ¥20,000 and ¥30,000 plus expressway tolls, with about 20 percent more at night. A private transfer from Narita starts from ¥45,500 for the whole car, tolls included.
Can I use Uber at Haneda or Narita?
Yes. Uber in Tokyo dispatches licensed taxis and premium cars, at a price close to a taxi, often with a pickup fee. It does not include a driver waiting for you in arrivals.
Is there a night surcharge for airport taxis in Tokyo?
Yes, about 20 percent between 22:00 and 05:00. For a private transfer the price is fixed in your written quote, which already shows any night supplement for very late or very early pickups.
How many suitcases fit in a Tokyo taxi?
A standard taxi takes about two large suitcases. A Toyota Alphard takes three to four, and a Hiace eight or more, which is why families and groups often prefer one private car to two taxis.
