Omotesando and Aoyama: Tokyo's designer shopping, street by street
Omotesando is the zelkova lined avenue that leads to Meiji Jingu, and for more than twenty years it has been where the world's fashion houses build their most daring stores. Behind it, the quiet streets of Aoyama hold the flagships of Japan's great designers. It is the best area in Tokyo to see Japanese fashion where it was born, and one of the most pleasant to walk. Here is how to plan it.

A boulevard of architecture
Omotesando Hills, by Tadao Ando, opened in 2006 with around a hundred shops around a spiral ramp, and was kept low to match the height of the trees. Jun Aoki's Louis Vuitton building looks like a stack of trunks, with the Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo art space on the seventh floor. Dior's white layered glass is by SANAA, and Toyo Ito's building for Tod's has a concrete lattice drawn from the zelkova branches. GYRE, by MVRDV, twists floor by floor and holds the MoMA Design Store and Comme des Garçons spaces. Across the crossing, Prada Aoyama by Herzog & de Meuron is a crystal of diamond shaped glass.
Japanese designers in Aoyama
The side streets of Minami-Aoyama are where Japanese fashion keeps its home stores, a few minutes' walk apart. Comme des Garçons Aoyama, enlarged in 2023 with a second floor designed by Rei Kawakubo, is near Prada. Yohji Yamamoto's Aoyama main store is close by. Issey Miyake opened the first BAO BAO flagship in Japan here in April 2026, and A-POC ABLE reopened in September 2026, enlarged into its largest store in Japan, both designed by Tokujin Yoshioka. The sacai Aoyama store is a short walk further.
Cat Street and the cafes
Cat Street crosses Omotesando and winds about a kilometre down to Shibuya, near Miyashita Park: a quiet lane of independent fashion, streetwear and designer resale such as RAGTAG. It is narrow and best on foot, so the car drops you at one end and meets you at the other. For a pause, Dandelion Chocolate is in the basement of GYRE and Omotesando Hills has cafes and restaurants inside. At the Aoyama end, the Nezu Museum has a beautiful garden and NEZUCAFÉ for its visitors. It usually opens 10 am to 5 pm, with last entry at 4:30, and closes on Mondays and between exhibitions, so check the official site before you go.
Are designer clothes cheaper in Japan?
Sometimes, but there is no rule. It depends on the exchange rate on the day you buy and on the tax refund, and many global houses now align their prices worldwide, so the difference can be small. Compare with the price at home before you decide. The clearest advantage in Aoyama is the range: the Japanese designers show their full collections in their flagship stores.
Tax-free from November 2026
From 1 November 2026 tax-free shopping in Japan works as a refund. You pay the price including 10 percent consumption tax, keep your receipts and register your purchases, and the tax is refunded at customs when you leave Japan, before check-in. Bring your passport when you shop, because it is still recorded at the till.
By car, and the price
Omotesando is busy, especially at weekends, and stopping is only possible in certain places. A chauffeur by the hour drops you as close as the traffic allows, collects you in the quieter Aoyama side streets, keeps your bags safely in the car and waits while you shop. Start with Meiji Jingu in the morning, or add Ginza in the afternoon. It is from ¥16,000 per hour with a two hour minimum, and Omotesando and Aoyama usually take three to four hours; a full day of 8 hours is from ¥126,000. Your chauffeur is a driver, not a personal shopper, and can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese, at the same price.
