teamLab Planets and teamLab Borderless: which one, and how to see both

The two teamLab museums are the most visited attractions in Tokyo right now, with around 4.2 million visitors between them in 2025. They are often confused, but they are very different experiences in two different parts of the city. Here is what to expect from each, how to book, and how to fit one or both into your day.

teamLab Planets, in Toyosu

Planets is the one where you walk barefoot. The route is fixed and leads through rooms of water, mirrors, soft floors and flowers, and in some of them the water reaches your knees, so wear clothes you can roll up. A visit takes about one and a half to two hours. Planets sits in Toyosu, on Tokyo Bay, and is due to stay open until the end of 2027.

teamLab Borderless, at Azabudai Hills

Borderless moved from Odaiba to Azabudai Hills, near Roppongi, in February 2024. There is no fixed route: artworks drift from room to room, and you wander and get lost on purpose. Most people stay two to three hours. It is the better choice if you like to explore at your own pace; Planets is better if you want a single, sensory journey.

Tickets and timing

Both venues sell timed tickets online, and weekends, holidays and school breaks often sell out days ahead, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Prices change with the date. Late afternoon and evening slots are calmer than midday. Toilets and lockers are inside, and photography is allowed everywhere.

Seeing both in one afternoon

The two museums are about twenty to twenty five minutes apart by car. A comfortable plan is Planets in the early afternoon, a coffee by the water in Toyosu, and Borderless from late afternoon, followed by dinner in Roppongi or Azabudai. With small children it is a long day, so most families choose one.

By car, and the price

A chauffeur by the hour takes you from your hotel to each museum door and waits while you are inside, which matters with children or after a long walk barefoot. It is from ¥16,000 per hour with a two hour minimum, and an afternoon with both museums usually takes five to six hours. Your chauffeur can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese, at the same price.
