How much does a private driver cost in Japan? Real prices for 2026

A private driver in Japan costs more than in most of Asia, and less than many visitors expect once tolls, parking and the time saved are counted. Here are real prices for 2026, what moves them up or down, and the one question to ask before you book anyone.

The short answer

In Tokyo a chauffeur by the hour costs around ¥16,000 per hour, usually with a two hour minimum. A full day of eight hours runs from about ¥126,000, and a ten hour day trip to Mount Fuji, Hakone or Nikko from about ¥157,500. Airport transfers are normally fixed: from about ¥29,500 for Haneda and ¥45,500 for Narita. These are Driven Tokyo prices for the Toyota Alphard, for the whole car, with tolls, parking and fuel included. Across Japan you will see quotes for a car with driver from roughly ¥60,000 to well over ¥200,000 a day, depending on what is and is not included.

What makes the price go up or down

Four things matter most. The vehicle: an Alphard for up to four guests is the standard, a Hiace for up to nine costs a little more, and a Mercedes-Benz S 500 is the top class. The hours: Japanese chauffeur services charge by time, not by distance, so a slow day in traffic costs the same as a fast one. The time of day: very late and very early hours carry a night supplement. And distance from Tokyo: a trip that ends far away, or runs over several days, includes the driver's return or overnight stay. Language does not change our price: an English, Italian, Spanish, French or Japanese speaking chauffeur costs the same.

What should be included

A fair quote includes expressway tolls, parking and fuel. Tolls alone can reach ¥5,000 to ¥10,000 on a Fuji or Nikko day, and parking at sights in central Tokyo is not cheap, so a quote that excludes them can look lower than it is. Ask too whether waiting time is included: at airports we include one hundred minutes after landing. On board, water, soft drinks, coffee, tea and refreshing towels should not be an extra.

Why the cheapest quote can be illegal

In Japan, carrying paying passengers requires a commercial licence and a car with a green number plate. Private cars have white plates. A driver who takes your money in a white plate car, often called shirotaku, is operating illegally, and the problem is not only legal: the car's insurance may not cover paying passengers if something goes wrong. Many low cost private driver offers online work this way. Before you book, ask for the operator's licence and look at the plate. Every Driven Tokyo journey is operated by a licensed hire car company with green plates, and we are happy to show it.

Is a private driver worth it compared with the train?

For one or two people travelling light between big cities, the Shinkansen is faster and cheaper, and we would tell you so. A driver starts to make sense with three or more people, with children or older travellers, with a lot of luggage, or for places the train serves badly: the Fuji lakes, Hakone's loop of sights, Nikko, the Kamakura coast. Split between four people, a ten hour Fuji day costs about the same per person as a good group tour, without the group.
