Your day in Hakone, at your own pace
Hakone is built for a private car. Done by train it is a relay of switchbacks, funiculars, cable cars and a pirate boat, beautiful, but a logistics puzzle that eats the day. With a private driver, the puzzle disappears. Soak in an onsen with the mountains around you, then stand among the sculptures of the Hakone Open-Air Museum with no rush to make a connection. Cross to Lake Ashi for the torii gate over the water, climb to the sulphur vents and black eggs of Owakudani, and on a clear day watch Mt Fuji rise across the lake.
